MERCIFUL
What do you do when you finally have the power to hurt the person who hurt you?
In 1 Samuel 26, David enters Saul’s camp and finds the king asleep—with Saul’s spear beside his head. David has the opportunity, the ability, and what looks like the perfect justification to take revenge. Instead, he chooses mercy.
Mercy is not weakness. It is strength restrained by righteousness. In this message from our MANNERISMS series, we examine what it means to become a merciful man: refusing to weaponize someone’s weakness, confronting sin without becoming sinful, and trusting God with justice instead of taking vengeance into our own hands.
David spared the life of his enemy. Jesus did something even greater—He gave His life for His enemies. The spear will eventually be in your hand. The text message, private information, influence, opportunity, or angry words will be available. What kind of man will you choose to be?
“But David said to Abishai, ‘Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless?’” —1 Samuel 26:9
